Polarisation potentials for positron-molecule collisions: positron-H, scattering

چکیده
Model polarisation potentials for use in calculating positron-molecule cross sections are often based on approximations in which terms that depend on the sign of the charge of the projectile are neglected. Thus, these potentials do not fully distinguish between electron and positron scattering. The validity of using such potentials for positronH2 collisions is investigated by performing scattering calculations using electronand positron-H, model polarisation potentials. Results show that, because of differences in the way electrons and positrons distort the target charge cloud, sign-dependent terms in the adiabatic potential can significantly influence the total cross section. Low-energy cross sections are also shown to be rather sensitive to how non-adiabatic polarisation effects are taken into account. Using a cut-off fully adiabatic positron-H, polarisation potential, theoretical total cross sections in reasonably good agreement with recent measurements are obtained.

R-matrix calculations of polarisation effects in low-energy positron-molecule collisions
The study of the interaction of positrons with atoms and molecules has become increasingly popular, because more and more experimental activities have become feasible. Although exchange effects are absent, the polarisation effects, caused by the attractive nature between the positron and the target electrons, make the positron-molecule collisions more difficult to handle than the corresponding ...

The UK molecular R-matrix method has been adapted to treat positron collisions from polyatomic targets. A simple empirical enhancement factor which corrects for the underestimation of electron–positron polarisation and correlation effects in the calculations performed with the static-plus-polarization model at low scattering energies is presented. Application of this model to positron scatterin...

Ab initio molecular R-matrix calculations are presented for collisions of low-energy positrons with the hydrogen fluoride molecule as a function of HF internuclear separation. Calculations presented are for Z total symmetry with and without polarization eA'ects. These calculations mirror recent electron-HF scattering calculations by Morgan and Burke. Strong evidence is obtained for the presence...
متن کاملElectron and positron collisions with polar molecules: studies with the benchmark water molecule
It is difficult to measure low-energy cross sections for collisions of charged particles with strongly dipolar systems since the magnitude of such cross sections is completely dominated by collisions in the forward direction. Theoretically, it is possible to account for the strong forward scattering using the Born approximation but the procedure for combining Born ‘top-up’ with the more sophist...
